Dear Maverick Community,
As you may have noticed, it’s been a while since the last post, and I owe you an update on some significant changes and exciting new directions.
After an acquisition that almost made it to the finish line earlier this year, I decided to break off the transaction and bear the dead deal fees, which drove me to wind up my search fund. During that time, I learned an incredible amount about the process and, more importantly, myself. I also learned what it truly means to have writer’s block, hence the recent inactivity.
The past few months have been busy experimenting with ways to set up a business model to self-fund a continued search, given my interest in investing and operating in companies is as strong as ever. For whatever reason, however, that time does not appear to be now.
As a result, I’m pausing my acquisition search efforts to pursue full-time opportunities and dive deeper into a professional topic I’m passionate about: HR tech and people analytics.
To explore this topic in further detail, I will be allocating time away from Maverick to a new newsletter named CapHuman. It’s in its early form but the newsletter will be an exciting, data-driven exploration of HR tech businesses and people analytics across both public and private markets. I’ll be testing and evolving my points of view on this space through a combination of primary and secondary research, opinions, and discussions with folks in the industry.
With Maverick, I’ll be converting the entire newsletter back to a free publication, where everyone can access all content without a paywall. I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support, insightful feedback, and active engagement throughout the past two years. Looking back to when Maverick was just an idea, I never imagined the friendships that would form as a result.
There is much to my search fund experience that I still would like to share, and I still plan to. Future posts to Maverick will be more infrequent than previously, but when I do post, each one will demand a higher standard from me to maximize its impact. Ultimately, I believe this new approach will deliver more value to aspiring searchers and those currently in the trenches. We’re operating in a much different environment than when I started my search fund journey almost three years ago. I owe it to you and future subscribers to hear a transparent perspective about how things have changed.
I cannot wait to share more details on CapHuman. Current subscribers will be added to the newsletter to follow along. The initial posts are now being finalized and expect to see something in your inbox soon.
Your understanding during this transition means a lot to me. As always, I am here to help.
Best,
David
P.S. I am on the lookout for challenging entrepreneurial roles in PE tech investing or operating (CoS, CXO) roles. If you or someone you know is searching for a driven professional ready to tackle hard challenges, my DMs are open.
